What Is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating (DR) is a proprietary metric developed by Ahrefs that measures the strength of a website's backlink profile compared to all other sites in their database. It runs on a 0–100 logarithmic scale, meaning it's progressively harder to increase your DR as you go higher.

DR focuses exclusively on backlinks — specifically the quantity and quality of unique referring domains. It does NOT measure traffic, content quality, or on-page SEO factors. A site with high DR has many high-quality domains linking to it.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter a domain — Type any domain name (e.g., "competitor.com") or paste a full URL.
  2. Click "Check DR" — The tool queries the Ahrefs public API in real time.
  3. Review the result — See the DR score, a color-coded label, and a contextual description.
  4. Compare domains — Check multiple domains to benchmark competitors and prospects.

Validation method

Tool guidance is checked against current public SEO documentation, live HTML/header behavior, sample URLs, and repeatable rule-based tests. When a tool uses scoring logic, deductions are intentionally conservative and explainable so users can see what triggered each warning.

Known limitations

  • Checks are based on publicly fetchable HTML, response headers, and browser-side input. They do not use private Google Search Console, analytics, or ranking data.
  • Scores and warnings are diagnostic aids, not guarantees of ranking improvement or Google indexation.
  • Pages blocked by robots.txt, login walls, bot protection, heavy JavaScript, or network timeouts may return incomplete results.
  • Validate critical fixes with official Google tools such as Search Console, Rich Results Test, Lighthouse, and your own crawl data.
